Your Blogs Place Among The Elite Is Waiting On You

If you blog, and I know you do, your claim to blogging elite status is sincerely waiting for you. At least it is if you can emphaticaly say “That’s ME!!” to this next scenario. Do you regularly catch yourself thinking “I need to write a blog post about that” to events in your daily life? Or have you been in a theater watching a movie and BAM! a great post idea strikes you? If it happens to you, you’ve got something interesting to say and the rest is childsplay. Let me show you why.
For starters let’s cover the technical. I’m going to assume you’ve read my study on micro managing Internal Pagerank to boost your natural rankings where you need a boost the most. Additionaly I’m going to assume that you’ve read my article on Blog Warfare, your basic battle plan on how to claim the position you believe is yours. This article is the next step in preparing to blind side, I mean make believers out of, your blogging peers in your chosen corner of the internet.
Target Aquired - Is It Time To “Fire the Big Guns”? Absolutely not!

I think the picture is self explanatory, your target has wingmen and those wingmen have friends too. You can’t easily poke any of them without the others noticing, a weak attack is twice as bad since you lose double the respect. You can write whatever you like but if you attack any of them head on to try and “show” your prowess in that area, you’ll very likely meet much more resistance than you can handle. You need allies, not a wall of flares all headed your way.
The Blog Entrepreneur recently poked the hornets nest in this article, he basicaly asks “Are A-list bloggers capable of producing anything of value, or are they famous for being famous“. My personal opinion is twofold. #1 - The correct answer is “both” since they are famous for being famous AND capable of producing content of value. #2 - and perhaps more importantly, the true answer is that it doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter because they have traffic, you want that traffic to visit your site too and no amount of copying them will help you get it. Perhaps receiving an honorable mention in one of their blog posts will help you out but simply providing better content, not good enough.
I poked a hornets nest lightly to test for effect. Screenshot from this article

I feel somewhat hesitant to share that screenshot with you since I had carefully crafted the question and used reaction trigger words like “only” etc. I also took advantage of my knowledge of John’s blogging by quoting him while he still doesn’t know who I am. Though he may have quickly fired a tongue in cheek “whatever - like you know anything” type of response at my very direct question he also did a few other things that display that he is all business. He came to check out Popular Wealth first, though it didn’t have a bio page up yet. He didn’t continue a personal attack. He realised I had mentioned one of the mistakes he had made in previous writings and not only responded to correct the mistake, he wrote an entire post to explain the mistake the next day. All excellent traits of a good leader. Poking your peers in this manner is ill advised, It wasn’t my intention to “out” John in any way, I just wanted a reaction and an answer to the Blog Entrepreneurs question. Bashing your peers - not good for anyone.
So what IS a good way to claim that traffic? Build a better trophy case !
Does your site have a trophy case? It should, I recommend using your about page. Shoemoney who I respect is famous for his 130,000 adsense check - take that fame trophy by earning a bigger one. John Chow is famous for his Google post and Digg antics, write an even better post. Darren Rowse of Pro Blogger is a genius, forget about creating a better “how to blog” resource than him right now but make sure that you take notice of the little things Darren does to expand his empire, like writing a “blogging is like…” series and linking to sites with page one results for that “like” term to generate a wider serps result footprint. Keep up.
That last paragraph is tongue in cheek because it would not be easy to accomplish any of it. Start working on goals you CAN reach and when you do, add them to your trophy case. Before long the trophy case starts to fill up and momentum carries you on to bigger game and eventually you EARN a place among the elite. As John mentioned in his comment, he now lets his RSS subscriber total speak for him. If you’re looking for places to set your crosshairs in order to add to your trophy case, it’s comments like that you’re looking for. If you read John’s posts you quickly find that he has also boasted about other things at various points in time like his Entrecard rankings. If your blog is in the bottomless pit of “Make Money Online” sites, beat John’s entrecard standing and take a picture. Get building a better trophy case that new visitors can find.
On a closing note, consider removing that feedburner chicklet that says you have 7 readers, it’s not a trophy - it’s a stain. The same applies to anything that shows you aren’t the battle hardened General, covered in awards, that you want promoting your articles. Less is definitely more in this case. People will follow you but you need to learn to lead them or they can’t.
