Tuesday, January 20, 2009 15:12The USS New York is built with recycled steel gathered from the World Trade Center and Saturday March 1st, 2008 it was christened to be a source of strength and inspiration for everyone. Let us never forget!

Friends and families of those who died in the Sept. 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks gathered to celebrate the christening of the USS New York. It was a happy moment and a sense of pride was eminent in everyones words. Using the scrap and recycled steel from the world trade center debris to create a new ship that will defend against terrorism was an excellent idea.
The USS New York contains 7.5 tons of world trade center steel and it was marked with a shield containing two gray bars to symbolize the twin towers. The banner above that declared “Never Forget” a popular slogan among New Yorkers. Dotty England smashed a bottle of champagne against the hull and said “May God bless this ship and all who sail on her”.

When the attacks occurred, the ship was planned but had no name. The Governer at the time, George Pataki, asked the Navy to commemorate the disaster by using the name “New York”. An exception to Navy policy was made to allow the assigning of a state name to a ship, in general state names apply only to submarines. From ashes to armor, it will not let us forget.
